TUTOR BOOKS
ORIENTATION
The series "A Step in Time for Brass" and "A Step in Time for Woodwind" has come about following a felt need for students of brass instruments, together with their teachers, to explore the early stage of instruction and tuition on all valved brass instruments and trombone.
This series explores the use of other signs and symbols in the earliest stages of playing, as suggested by The National Curriculum. I have indicated the height and depth of sound (Pitch) by the introduction of Steps. Experimenting with Sounds encourages students to explore their own inward sense of Rhythm. Volume changes will enable them to Create or Compose their own sound patterns, rather than always having to read and play other composers Music.
I have included as much material that will excite and stimulate students and which will encourage them to explore other material. Some students will wish to explore particular styles of music, for example: Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Contemporary including Jazz, Rock or Pop, or indeed may wish to compose their own materials.
Duets in varying styles are introduced early on to encourage ensemble playing and to improve aural perceptions. Basic rhythmical skills are encouraged. Counting, sound production, techniques and sight reading skills are also explored.
Whilst trying to get students to play their instruments as much as possible in the earliest stage I have tried to introduce sufficient Theoretical musical material to assist with playing in three keys namely C major, F major and G major although one of the Carols at the back of the book is in E flat major. By introducing these simple keys I have tried to encourage students to play with others in Small groups/ensembles of bands. There is much good material available today which caters for ensembles and which remains in simple keys.
The Care and Maintenance of all musical instruments is essential and should be dealt with in these early stages. Having placed this section at the back of the books has not been done so to try to devalue importance. Brass instruments need to be washed-out regularly and should be kept well oiled and lubricated. After all each instrument cared for should last a lifetime.
I hope you enjoy your music making and that this series of books will assist you in discovering varied styles. Remember to have fun and keep the practice regular and consistent.
